Starting to migrate from a healthcare idiot
March 4, 2011so I have pondered the question about becoming a non healthcare idiot and as part of that process I have determined that there are five reasons why it is/has happened. the first is that doctors have to see u and move u on so quickly to make any money. now I know you say doctors make too much but I will cover that later. The second issue is the lack of any performance criteria. Healthcare providers have no incentive to get a diagnosis right the first time, in fact the incentive is almost the opposite to keep patients coming back for new and different procedures and medications. The third point is the proliferation of information. On any given day one can research any medical topic and find multiple if not hundreds of points on the topic. The problem with this is that most of these sites are either too doomsday, not accurate, or commercial. The fourth area is technology. Healthcare providers, doctors, hospitals, and others are engaged in a proliferation of technology that doesn’t talk to each other. My question is how does one (as a patient) keep up. We as patients are virtually at the mercy of healthcare technologies that don’t work together, are typically out of date, and are usually not accurate. The final item is access to healthcare providers, how long do you wait to get an appointment? and once you are waiting how long to you wait? Take my quick survey below. My next set of blogs will begin to layout a strategy for dealing with these issues.
